PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Firefighters battling a section of the Rowena Fire showed that it’s not just people who may need help as the fire continues to burn between Mosier and The Dalles.
While a Polk County task force was working to contain a section of the fire near Tooley Lake, officials said a baby deer emerged from a burned area, “crying and making a beeline” for the firefighters.
After scooping up the fawn off the hot ground, firefighters cleaned it up with water and checked for any injuries.
Once the fawn was steadied and back on its feet, officials said it wandered to safety towards a nearby green patch.
As of Sunday morning, the Rowena Fire has burned 3,858 acres and is 10% contained. According to the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office, the fire has destroyed a total of 56 homes and 91 structures, including sheds, barns and shops.
But fire officials say twelve task forces and 592 firefighters are continuing to work day and night to keep the fire from growing, adding they are making “steady progress” and some evacuation levels have been downgraded.
GoFundMe has also launched a centralized donation hub to aid those who have lost their homes in the fire.
