(WANE) — Two Indiana cities are offering incentives to people looking to make a move.
Fort Wayne and Angola are both partnering with MakeMyMove, a marketplace for relocation programs. MakeMyMove works with local organizations to offer exclusive moving incentives, including cash payouts, workspace opportunities, club memberships, entertainment and more.
Evan Hock, co-founder and COO of MakeMyMove said population decline is a big issue.
“Population decline is no longer a distant demographic trend—it’s a front-page issue,” he said. “Communities of all sizes are waking up to the reality that they’re in a nationwide competition for talent. Places like Angola and Fort Wayne are ahead of the curve because they’ve added direct talent recruitment to their economic development playbook.”
The two programs are called Flourish in Fort Wayne and Adventure Awaits in Angola. Applications are currently open. You can check out the MakeMyMove website here.
Total incentive: $14,580
Total Incentive: $19,849
A number of Indiana cities have already partnered with MakeMyMove, including the city of New Haven and Muncie.
WANE 15 spoke with Director of Communication for the City of Muncie, Amber Greene, on Thursday. Muncie partnered with MakeMyMove nearly three years ago, looking to drive growth in the community and economy, and offer remote workers a sense of belonging in a new place.
“I get a sense of what they’re [movers] looking for,” said Greene. “I can imagine that moving to a different state would be super overwhelming, so it kind of alleviates that sense of overwhelming that they may have.”
According to Greene, the partnership has brought positive growth in both the economy and the population. “We had seen a steady decline over the last 50 years. For the last 3 years, according to the U.S. Census, we have seen an increase year over year.”
Since the program began, the community has welcomed 192 movers into the area. This includes 112 adults and 80 children.
According to Greene, that’s an annual economic impact of $6.1 million and creates between 40 and 50 jobs yearly by bringing movers into the community. Greene said they expect to hit 200 movers by the end of this month.
“That’s bringing families into the community, it’s bringing the tax revenue, fresh faces and new ideas… Over a 3-year period, you’re looking at somewhere between a $15 and $18 million economic impact. For a community of our size, that’s huge.”
Each community’s requirements are different.
In Muncie, applicants must work remote jobs. They have to provide proof of employment and income of at least $50,000 per year. Muncie also offers a $5,000 cash incentive. The mover receives half of the stipend when they move and the other half after a year of living in the area. There are also non-cash incentives working with Ball State University and other local organizations.
Muncie is also launching a pilot program with MakeMyMove to promote movers specifically looking for employment in Muncie.
The city of New Haven partnered with MakeMyMove back in 2022 but has since discontinued the partnership. WANE 15 spoke with City of New Haven Director of Community Development Zach Washler, who said that the program successfully moved six families, but the partnership was discontinued prior to 2024.
