PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Firefighters in Sherman County have made substantial progress on the containment of the Ferry Fire, officials announced on Saturday.

While the fire was listed as only 5% contained on Friday, the containment figure jumped to 43% by mid-Saturday morning, the Sherman County Emergency Services said.

This comes after the fire, about 1.5 miles south of Cottonwood Canyon State Park, started on Thursday, burning about 5,000 acres, then nearly doubled in size the following day. By Saturday morning, the Ferry Fire was burning 10,359 acres.

Officials said 217 firefighting personnel are contributing to fighting the blaze.

Officials said to sign up for emergency notifications for the latest information on evacuation levels in Sherman and Gillian counties.

“The John Day River will be lifted today. The official order will be posted on the Oregon-Washington Bureau of Land Management website after final approval,” Sherman County Emergency Services said. “Active water dipping into the river will continue by helicopters as needed. Boaters should not stop or linger in the active fire zone and follow all directions from on-site fire personnel.”
