ROCKWOOD, Pa. (WTAJ) — Two women are dead after a crash between a CSX freight train and an SUV on Thursday at a railroad crossing.

Emergency responders were sent to Rockwood Borough at 10:28 a.m. The crash happened at Bridge Street just south of Main Street. According to Somerset State Police Corporal Nicholas Gray, both occupants of the SUV, an 85-year-old woman and a 67-year-old woman, died from the crash.

Coroner Jeff Lees identified the women as Susan Spangler, 67, and Deloris Latshaw, 85, both of Somerset. He said one woman died at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center and the other died at the scene. An eyewitness told WTAJ that one of the victims was taken from the scene by helicopter to the hospital.

According to state police, the women in the SUV drove through the railroad crossing and were hit by the train at its front side door. It was noted that the crossing had “all traffic control devices functioning properly at the time of the crash.”

Two occupants of the CSX train, an engineer and a conductor, were uninjured. State police are investigating the crash.
