CHICAGO (WGN) — A teen boy is recovering in the hospital on Thursday morning after he was badly injured when gunfire erupted during a fight near a lakefront beach on the city’s South Side overnight.

Police say the shooting unfolded just before 10 p.m. in the 600 block of East 31st Street, near 31st Street Beach in Douglas.

According to police, the victim, a 17-year-old boy, was outside in the area when a fight broke out between multiple people. Amid the fight, officers say multiple gunshots rang out.

The teen was struck in the shooting, suffering a gunshot wound to his abdomen, he was later taken to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

Authorities have not provided specific details on how many people were involved in the altercation and say no arrests have been made.

It remains unclear what instigated the fight and investigation is ongoing.
