LAFAYETTE, La. (
KLFY) — Lafayette now has a semi-professional basketball team. Meet the
Lafayette Ballers, the newest expansion franchise in the
American Basketball Association.
Amanda Perero, CEO and director of the team, relates how the team came to be in the Hub City.
“Well, I actually was on the phone with my vice president, and he was a coach for ABA in Mississippi,” Perero said. “So he kind of told me about it, told me what it was, what it was about. And then I went ahead and I contacted Mr. Joe (Newman, ABA CEO), and I’ve been operating with Mr. Joe and Mr. Richard (Tinkham, ABA co-founder), which is the owner of the Indiana Pacers family ever since. And I was able to get certified in Lafayette Parish to be able to have an ABA team for Lafayette.”
The squad is hosting tryouts on June 21 and 28, according to Ballers head coach John Francis.
“We’re looking for work, good work ethic, we’re looking for good sportsmanship, and we’re looking for people with good attitudes,” Francis said.
