Second-year cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry was a standout during day two, and head coach Kellen Moore has been seeing an improvement in the sophomore’s performance.
“He’s doing an excellent job. You can just tell. Again, a good example of those ones that we’ve talked about in the past. Your rookie year, there’s a lot of things moving. Second year, you get a big second-year jump. Certainly, he’s a great example of that,” the head coach said.
One of the biggest adjustments Moore has made has been his approach to success in practice. During his previous stops as an offensive coordinator, the first-year head coach only focused on one side of the ball, but now, Moore wants balanced success.
“I’m obviously spending a lot of time with the offense, making sure that side is taken care of, but you’re still part of the defense. You’re rooting for those guys. You love when you see those guys make plays,” Moore continued.
However, the offense was making plays throughout practice, both in red zone drills and in 7-on-7s, and while training camp will be the proving ground of the quarterback battle, Moore has already emphasized what he’s looking for out of the QB room.
“Execution, decision making and then obviously, the last few days it’s been more situational football, playing the situation. The first nine days worried about executing the play, and then now, we’re trying to execute the situation. They both did a really good job today,” Moore said about quarterbacks Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough.
