BLACKFOOT — A large crowd gathered outside Bingham Memorial Hospital Tuesday morning to celebrate a remarkable milestone: 75 years of Bingham Healthcare providing care to the people of Bingham County and surrounding communities.

Current and former staff, volunteers, and community members gathered on the hospital’s front steps to honor the legacy of what began in 1950 as a modest 60-bed rural facility and has evolved into one of eastern Idaho’s leading healthcare networks.

The celebration included a look back at Bingham’s growth, technological advancements, and — most importantly — the people who made it possible.

From its early beginnings in a potato field, Bingham Healthcare has been guided by a mission rooted in rural values and inspired by the Mayo Clinic’s “Miracle in the Cornfield.

According to legend, after a tornado struck Rochester, Minnesota, in 1883, Dr. William Mayo and his sons collaborated with Catholic nuns to treat the injured. Inspired by a vision, the nuns’ leader, Mother Alfred Moes, urged Mayo to help build a hospital in the middle of a cornfield.

That small hospital became Saint Mary’s and eventually grew into the world-renowned Mayo Clinic. Hence, it’s remembered as the “Miracle in the Cornfield.”

Jake Erickson, CEO of Bingham Healthcare, centered his remarks on the idea of sacrifice, crediting the community for giving time, energy, and support over the decades.

“While the hospital was still a dream, the community has sacrificed untold hours,” Erickson said. “That spirit of sacrifice has never left. It’s in the bones of this building.”

Erickson praised the dedication of employees past and present, noting those who served during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and put their own health at risk to serve others.

Board chairman and longtime Blackfoot resident Scott Reese became emotional as he spoke about the care his late mother received at Bingham. He credited the hospital’s staff for their compassion and professionalism, saying their impact extended far beyond the realm of medicine.

“The staff here does not get enough credit. They are the heart and soul of this place,” Reese said. “From the food service people to the administrators — these are the people who taught me community service.”

Today, the Bingham Healthcare includes over 1,100 employees and over 160 specialists in Blackfoot, Idaho Falls, Ammon, Pocatello, and Shelley.

As one of the region’s top employers and healthcare innovators, Bingham Healthcare is a state-of-the-art, not-for-profit critical access facility. A trusted resource in eastern Idaho, the facility remains strong and independent with a legacy of service and sacrifice to stand on.

Bingham Healthcare continues to invest in advanced technology, upgraded facilities, and skilled professionals to deliver big-city care in the heart of rural Idaho.
