Owen County YMCA shuttering its childcare programs

OWEN COUNTY, Ind. — The Owen County YMCA is shutting down its childcare programs.

In a post on its website, the Owen County Family YMCA reported that it intends to close its Kids’ Campus in August. The YMCA, which is located along State Road 46 in Spencer, indicated that it invested $100,000 in its childcare program over the last three years, but the funds invested were not enough to prevent the closure.

“Unfortunately, the rising costs and challenges associated with childcare are no longer sustainable,” Owen County YMCA administrators wrote on their website. “For the last three years, we’ve invested over $100,000 in our childcare program, and we can’t continue. Our last day for care will be Aug. 5.”

The Owen County YMCA’s Kids’ Campus currently operates from 6:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. It offers day camp, after-school, infant, toddler and preschool programs. The YMCA charged anywhere from $210 to $50 a week for the programs.

“Thank you to an incredible staff for pouring so much love into our future generations,” YMCA administrators wrote on their website. “And thank you to the families who we’ve been honored to serve. We know how hard it is to find quality childcare. You can look for childcare alternatives through Childcare Finder.

“While this change is difficult, it reflects our responsibility to steward YMCA resources wisely. We remain committed to serving families in other capacities. We now have an opportunity to focus strategically on our mission of building a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.”
