“No Kings” protests planned for June 14th locally, nationally

(WJBF) – Saturday, June 14th is Flag Day and also the day of the military parade to honor the 250th birthday of the Army and the 79th birthday of President Donald Trump.

The military parade has been designated a National Special Security Event — similar to a presidential inauguration or state funeral. It’s estimated to cost between $25 million and $45 million. That status is reserved for events that draw large crowds and potential mass protests. Including “No Kings” protests.

Around 1,500 protests are being organized across the United States opposing the event.

The “No Kings” website says, “On June 14—Flag Day—President Trump wants tanks in the street and a made-for-TV display of dominance for his birthday. A spectacle meant to look like strength. But real power isn’t staged in Washington. It rises up everywhere else. No Kings is a nationwide day of defiance. From city blocks to small towns, from courthouse steps to community parks, we’re taking action to reject authoritarianism—and show the world what democracy really looks like.”

According to the No Kings site, there are local protests in both Augusta and Aiken.
