IDAHO — Idaho’s Free Fishing Day is on Saturday and all anglers are invited to celebrate the day by fishing without a license.

The event is designed for youth 16 years and younger and is completely free to attend, according to a news release from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. The IDFG encourages participants to bring their own fishing rods.

Idaho Fish and Game is particularly excited about two separate events in Salmon and Challis. In Salmon, the derby will take place at Kid’s Creek Pond, where prizes will be awarded for the biggest fish caught in four separate age categories. Registration is open from 8:30 to 11:45 a.m. Prizes will be awarded at noon.

Young anglers will gather at Blue Mountain Kid’s Pond in Challis for a similar event supported by local merchants and the Challis Community Trails Alliance.

Local experts will be on-hand to help young anglers in both locations. There will be a limited amount of gear available to borrow as well.

“When fishing with kids, remember to keep it fun, short, and simple,” the news release says.

The events are sponsored by Idaho Fish and Game and the Salmon-Challis National Forest.

While no fishing license is required on Free Fishing Day, all other fishing regulations remain in effect.
