A man from Boone County has been arrested for stealing checks from his grandfather and then writing checks to himself totaling $2,700 and cashing them. Facing six felony charges is 18-year-old Colton Evan Edward Watters of Harrison.
According to the probable cause affidavit from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, the grandfather reported a check was taken from his truck. He received a copy of the check from his bank and it indicated his grandson was the payee.
Twenty days later, the grandfather met with investigators to report Watters had stolen several checks and altered another check. The stolen checks were made out to Watters and he had forged his grandfather’s signature. The grandfather confronted Watters through text message about the theft and Watters indicated he had done it.
In all, five checks were cashed illegally for a total of $2,700.
Watters is charged with five counts of second degree forgery and one count of theft of property. He was released from the Boone County Jail after posting $2,500 bond. He was then transferred to the Carroll County Jail as the Berryville Police Department had a hold placed on him for a contempt of court charge.
