Snake season is here: Safety tips from Mount Diablo State Park

(KRON) — The Bay Area is home to multiple species of snakes, including the venomous rattlesnake.

Warmer weather means more active snakes, according to California State Parks. With summer approaching, Mount Diablo State Park has provided a list of snake safety tips for hikers and park-goers.

“As the weather warms up, snakes are out and about,” Mount Diablo State Park shared on social media. “When you visit, you may see one like the well-fed and camouflaged rattlesnake [shown in the photo provided by MDSP]. King snakes, gopher snakes, and garter snakes are some of the others who call the park home.”

Snake safety tips from Mount Diablo State Park:

• None of the snakes in the park want to eat you. They just want to be left alone to go about their business.

• Rattlesnakes are the only venomous snakes here. They only bite people if they feel threatened.

• Be aware that rattlesnakes don’t always rattle.

• Stay safe by watching where you are going and keeping your hands and feet where you can see them. Don’t step or reach into or past places snakes might take shelter such as rock ledges and crevices, shrubs, and logs.

• Give them space. Even if it is not a rattlesnake, please watch but don’t touch. The closer you get, the more stressful for the snake, and you may interrupt what it was doing to survive.
