An arrest citation showed that Russ Smith, 34, was allegedly seen by police just after 12:30 a.m. making an illegal U-turn on Baxter Avenue near Highland Avenue in Louisville. After being pulled over, police said they could smell alcohol on his breath.
Officers said Smith admitted to having two bourbon drinks before driving.
During field sobriety tests, the citation noted that Smith showed three of the eight clues on the walk-and-turn test, including failing to walk a straight line and not touching heel to toe. He also swayed while standing on one leg, according to the police.
He was charged with DUI, reckless driving, and driving with expired registration.
Smith played under former coach Rick Pitino at Louisville from 2010 through 2014, where he averaged 14.3 points per game.
As a Cardinal, he helped lead Louisville to two Final Four appearances and a national championship. The championship and final fours were later vacated as a result of an internal scandal.
He’s due to appear in court at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11, per court records.
