Woman injured when she shot at deputies in Douglas County released, facing charges

The woman injured when deputies shot her after she shot at them last month in Douglas County has been released from the hospital and returned to Douglas County to face multiple charges for the incident. Fifty-eight-year-old Susan Sinclair of rural Seymour is being held in the Douglas County Jail after being released from Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

According to information from Sheriff Chris DeGase and court documents in the case, the incident happened May 21 when deputies went to Sinclair’s residence to take her into custody on felony warrants for third degree assault, third degree assault resisting arrest and 40 misdemeanor counts of animal neglect and abandonment.

When deputies went to her residence, Sinclair refused to open the door. One of the deputies kicked the door open and walked through the doorway when Sinclair fired a shot. The deputy fell backwards, got back up and started entering the house when Sinclair fired another shot. The deputies ordered Sinclair to exit the house. Both deputies had fired shots into the house towards Sinclair at this point.

A voice from inside the house says “I’ve got guns in both hands.” The Deputies told Sinclair to drop the guns but she said “I’m not dropping the guns, guys.” Then Sinclair fired another shot.

The deputies then charged into the house and were able to take Sinclair into custody after a struggle where Sinclair would not comply with deputy’s commands.

After the deputies cleared the rest of the house, they radioed for emergency medical help and started providing first aid as Sinclair has received a gunshot wound to her right eye.

From that incident, Sinclair is facing eight felony charges including two counts of first degree assault involving a special victim, two counts of armed criminal action, two counts of aiding or abetting a person shooting, unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest. She is being held without bond in the Douglas County Jail.
