In Grant Park, 1,500 people worked up a sweat to raise money for the American Cancer Society in its 54th year.
“Walk and Roll” is the longest-running cancer fundraiser in Illinois. Participants had their choice of biking, skating, running or walking.
“We see people along the lakefront every day walking, running, biking, skating, so why not raise money for cancer research for that? We love to have survivors and caregivers out here. They’re definitely the faces of what we do every day,” Jody Phillips of the American Cancer Society said.
Cancer survivors include WGN-TV reporter Mike Lowe as well as motivational speaker and author Randi Moxi.
“I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer just about a year ago, and after a year of radiation and chemo therapy and treatment, I’m standing here today with the cancer undetectable,” Lowe said.
“It is overwhelming. It’s beautiful. It’s wonderful, and I think together we’re going to make a huge difference and eventually get to an end of this nonsense,” Moxi added.
The $400,000 raised during the event alone helps pay for research and patient care programs.
