Up to 144K gallons of sewer overflow discharged into Breckenridge creek

STEPHENS COUNTY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Up to 144,000 gallons of sewer overflow was discharged into a Breckenridge creek due to recent high rains.

The City of Breckenridge sent a public notification on the issue Friday, saying that the night of June 3, high rains caused a Sanitary Sewer Overflow from a manhole near the 800 block of Breckenridge Avenue, and during this event, an estimated 72,000 to 144,000 gallons of sewage was discharged into the Walker Branch Drainage, which flows into the Gunsolus Creek.

No fish kills have been reported in connection to this incident, and city officials have sanitized the area as well as everything downstream with chlorine.

A report was filed with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Public Notification: A Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) has occurred caused by Inflow and Infiltration and an inability to keep up with the Flow at Lift Station #1 Breckenridge, TX – City of Breckenridge Public Works department is notifying the public that a Sanitary Sewer Overflow has occurred from a manhole east of Breckenridge Avenue (800 block), caused by Inflow and Infiltration (due to the heavy rains our area has been receiving) and an inability to keep up with the flow at Lift Station #1. The flow appears to have traveled southeast through the Walker Branch Drainage approximately 140 meters before entering the Gunsolus Creek. No fish kills are noted at this time. The estimated discharge is between 72,000-144,000 gallons. This occurred approximately, 10:30 p.m. on June 3, 2025. Crews have sanitized the area as well as everything downstream with chlorine. A report has been filed with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
