National Doughnut Day is celebrated annually on the first Friday of June, and law enforcement took the opportunity to treat themselves.
“Today, we’re proudly embracing the glaze, the sprinkles, and the jelly-filled joy. If you see our officers with a donut in hand — just know, it’s for official morale purposes,” The Selma Police Department wrote in a social media post.
Visalia Police also treated themselves, opting for a local classic, Scottie’s Donuts. Clovis Police took a vote on their favorites; maple bars came out on top, followed by glaze twists in second, and apple fritters in third.
So what’s the story between doughnuts and cops?
The Smithsonian Magazine says one reason may be that back in the day, doughnut shops were one of the only places open late at night, making them a perfect stop for graveyard shift officers.
