Chicago police said the single-vehicle crash occurred just before 11 p.m. Thursday, in the 1100 block of North Central Avenue in Austin.
According to police, a 31-year-old man traveling southbound in a white sedan when he merged into the northbound lane.
Officers said the driver then crashed into a fence before hitting police.
The driver suffered serious injuries in the crash and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
A 23-year-old man who was in the passenger seat suffered a broken ankle and lacerations and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Currently, it is unclear what led to the crash and authorities have not identified the victim killed.
