CHICAGO (WGN) — A man is dead and another is recovering in the hospital on Friday morning following an overnight crash on the West Side.

Chicago police said the single-vehicle crash occurred just before 11 p.m. Thursday, in the 1100 block of North Central Avenue in Austin.

According to police, a 31-year-old man traveling southbound in a white sedan when he merged into the northbound lane.

Officers said the driver then crashed into a fence before hitting police.

The driver suffered serious injuries in the crash and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

A 23-year-old man who was in the passenger seat suffered a broken ankle and lacerations and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Currently, it is unclear what led to the crash and authorities have not identified the victim killed.

An investigation by Chicago’s Major Accident Detectives is now underway.
