NOTE: This article is now an almanac of Thursday’s weather. We have published a new forecast story for Friday.
Thursday highs were far more agreeable than Wednesday with much of the area returning to the 70s.
The one exception again being areas near the lake where persistent northeast winds continue to deliver cooler temperatures.
It’s been a relatively cool period going back to mid-May. Thursday made it 17 of the past 19 days to post a daily temperature deficit.
The average “high temperature” across the lower 48 Thursday was about 78.5-degrees. 215 million residents enjoyed temperatures of at least 80-degrees and 59 million above 90 degrees.
Sunshine was a bit subpar thanks in part to the extensive haze from Canadian Wildfire smoke that prompted an Air Quality Alert to be issued for Chicagoland. The designation continues through midnight Friday, according to the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications.
Thursday was the first Air Pollution Action Day issued by the Illinois EPA so far this year.
Late afternoon AQI (Air Quality Index) readings were in the “unhealthy” category for virtually the entire area.
