The San Francisco Fire Department was dispatched at 1:54 a.m. to the report of a fire in the 500 block of Fifth Avenue. The flames spread across five three-story multi-residential buildings as people were evacuated from their homes, according to fire officials.
One firefighter suffered a twisted ankle while working at the scene. No residents were injured, according to fire officials. A cat that was reported missing was later found deceased.
A total of 35 residents were displaced in the fire and are being assisted by the American Red Cross, SFFD said.
Officials are asking the public to avoid the areas between Fifth Avenue and Cabrillo Street and Fifth Ave. and Anza Street as fire crews continue to work.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
