Chicago police said the crash happened just before 10:45 p.m. in the 1100 block of North Central Avenue.
A 31-year-old man was driving a white sedan southbound when the vehicle merged into the northbound lanes, hit a fence and then hit a pole where it came to rest, according to investigators.
Police said the man sustained “severe body trauma” and was treated by paramedics with the Chicago Fire Department before being taken to Stroger Hospital where he died.
Authorities added a 23-year-old passenger suffered a broken ankle and lacerations, was treated by CFD paramedics and taken to West Suburban Hospital in serious condition.
Police said this was a single-vehicle crash and the investigation is ongoing.
