Last year, Governor Josh Shapiro signed a budget with more than $11 million for after-school programs. This year, lawmakers included a $10 million increase.
Supporters for the increase said the programs improve grades and build skills, such as communication, teamwork and problem solving.
“We also know that strong after-school programs help keep children safe,” said Rep. Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-Snyder). “They reduce juvenile crime, lower dropout rates, and give students access to mentors and positive role models. Every hour spent in a structured, nurturing environment is an hour invested in a stronger, safer Pennsylvania.”
Every $1 spent on after-school programs saves the Commonwealth $7, according to a Joint State Government Commission report on after-school programs.
