Elizabeth Green was born Elizabeth Allen at her grandmother’s house in Baker. Since then, she has lived in Baton Rouge, Port Allen, New Orleans, and Scotlandville.
Green has been a pillar of the Scotlandville community and has owned her own home for 72 years.
She plans to celebrate with a birthday party that includes family and friends. There will be soul food and cake for attendees to enjoy, the family says.
The Louisiana native has seen and done a lot in her life. She was baptized in 1933 and then married five years later on Christmas Day.
She worked as a housekeeper for 40 years and spent an additional 31 years working for former East Baton Rouge coroner Hypolite Landry.
Green has been a faithful member of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church since 1940.
She recalled being granted the right to vote for the first time and said she has been going to the polls ever since.
Her daughter, Demetria Perkins, said that her mother likes to travel. Green has visited friends and family in England, Baltimore, Paris, Nevada, Atlanta, Niagara Falls, California, Florida, North Carolina, and Texas, according to Perkins.
Along with her love of travel, Perkins said she loves to quilt and sew. She has made quilts for her grandkids and some of her great-grandchildren.
Green has three daughters, nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. One of her siblings, Ireena Shirley “Rena” Lee, is 101.
So, what is the secret to living a long life? The Louisiana native said, “Treat everyone right and serve the good Lord.”
As for what is the most important thing in life, Green said, “family and service to the Lord.”
Her daughter said that she is welcoming, loves to laugh, make jokes, and remains active to this day.
After the birthday party is over, Green is looking forward to resting and sending thank you cards to anyone who comes to her celebration.
The celebration will start at noon on Saturday, June 14, at Gloryland Baptist Church on Michelli Drive.
