Death under investigation following Clay County pursuit

CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO-WAWV) — A Brazil man died in the hospital after he was taken into custody following a police pursuit.

In a news release, the Indiana State Police said they were waiting on an autopsy to determine the cause of 35-year-old Aaron Krout’s death. The release noted that instead of taking him to jail, they rushed him to a hospital “due to indicators that he was under the influence of a controlled substance.”

They added that Krout had a medical episode while at the hospital and died. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

The incident began around 5 p.m. Wednesday when officers spotted a suspicious subject and vehicle near Cory on County Road 300 South.

Officials said the driver disregarded emergency lights, and a pursuit ensued. The Clay County Sheriff’s Department used stop sticks, and an ISP trooper, Caleb Cannon, used a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle after it struck the trooper’s vehicle.
