Seymour attorney busted for tax evasion, state police say

SEYMOUR, Ind. — An Indiana attorney is accused of not paying any income tax since 2018, either personally or for his businesses.

Jason Smith, 45, of Seymour was arrested by Greenwood police officers on Tuesday. He is charged with 11 felonies, including corrupt business influence, tax evasion and theft. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance.

According to the Indiana State Police, an investigation into Smith began last year after it was reported that Smith had failed to file any business or personal tax returns.

Smith is an attorney who owns both Smith Law Services and Floyd Harris Holdings LLC. State police determined from 2019 to 2023, Smith deposited more than $2.5 million into his Smith Law Services bank account. During that same time period, he deposited more than $1.3 million into his Floyd Harris Holdings account.

He never paid taxes on either of these accounts, police said, with records showing he failed to pay any income tax, personally or for his businesses, since 2018.

State police searched Smith’s Seymour home in October 2024 where a “suspected controlled substance” was reportedly found.

A warrant wasn’t issued for Smith’s arrest until June 2.

Taken into custody in Johnson County, Smith will be transferred to Jackson County for his initial court appearance.

Smith’s most serious crime, a Level 5 felony, carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison.
