”I can’t wait another 25 years,” said Don, a longtime Pacers fan.
“We’re both 70, we don’t have much time left. They’ve got to do it now,” said Tony, another longtime fan.
Tony and Don first started going to Pacers games when they were attending Ball State University together and the Pacers were winning ABA Championships in the 1970s.
The Pacers are back in the NBA Finals for the first time since 2000. Don wore his shirt on Wednesday from that series.
”It was amazing,” he said. “Of course, it was a great finals with Reggie [Miller] going up against the mighty Shaq [O’Neal] and Kobe [Bryant].”
After 25 years, it’s finally time for a new Eastern Conference champs shirt.
”I thought it might happen sooner than this but it finally did happen,” said Tony.
Bren Sparrow went to the Pacers Team Store on Wednesday to try and find one of those new shirts. To mark the occasion, he wore his shirt from the 2000 ECF championship.
”I hung onto this and my wife said I have enough t-shirts but here’s one I kept and the hat too,” Bren said.
When he compares the atmosphere in Indianapolis between now and 2000, he said fans are even more excited.
”10 times ramped up more,” Bren said. “I have never heard the fieldhouse, on tv you could even tell how loud it was.”
There was no shortage of fans in the store on Wednesday trying to get something new before the team tips off Thursday night.
”We got a Yes ‘Cers shirt for our son and a [Pascal] Siakam jersey for him, as well,” said Suzie.
She and her husband Glenn are season ticket holders and very excited to be inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse to watch the Pacers play in the NBA Finals in person.
”It’s going to be crazy, mayhem,” Glenn said. “We’ve been to some games where it’s just nuts, you can barely hear yourself think, but I think it’s going to be a whole new level with the finals.”
If you want to add an NBA Finals patch to your Pacers jersey, you can get one pressed on at the team store for $20.
