Man accused of vandalizing, destroying numerous Whitley County gravesites
WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky. (FOX 56) — An investigation is underway, and one man was arrested on Tuesday after numerous resting places were vandalized over the weekend at a Whitley County cemetery.

The Whitley County Sheriff’s Department announced on Facebook that just before 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, investigators were called to the Hamblin Cemetery, where multiple graves, monuments, headstones, and ornaments were reportedly defaced and destroyed.

Officials said the destruction took place between the afternoon of Sunday, June 1, and the morning hours of Tuesday, June 3.

Pictures shared by the sheriff’s department include a lot of derogatory remarks and illustrations on numerous tombstones.

Court documents show that Loyle Garfield Griffith, 48, of Williamsburg, was identified as a suspect in the grave violation after investigators found a stolen Cumberland Mint gaming card at the cemetery, and its owner accused him of taking it.

Deputies wrote in an arrest citation that when law enforcement found him at the cemetery, Griffith was “attempting to clean the headstones.”

WCSO deputies said in an arrest report that Griffith allegedly admitted to vandalizing the gravesites and was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center, where he is being held on a $7,500 cash bond.

He was charged with first-degree possession of methamphetamine – third offense or higher—and violating graves.

The investigation at Hamblin Cemetery remains ongoing.
