Tuvshinjargal Gombo, director of the Church’s Mongolia office, received the Polar Star medal from President Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh following a number of community-enriching accomplishments.
Gombo has taken initiative in a number of programs and activities like self-reliance, addiction recovery, and English language learning programs. Gombo’s humanitarian efforts have also included increasing access to education, health, child protection, and disaster relief. The church also notes her efforts collaborating with BYU on international law and religion symposiums and food preservation.
According to the LDS Church, Gombo spoke on behalf of the Church during Pope Francis’ visit to Mongolia in 2023. Gombo also played a major role in 12 significant interfaith meetings, including services during Pope Francis’ visit.
The award was given during a ceremony on February 28, 2025, at the Citizens’ Hall of Bayanzurkh District. Created in 1936, the medal, commonly referred to as the ‘Order of the Polar Star’, is one of the highest national awards in Mongolia for civilians.
The medal is meant to commemorate the country of Mongolia overcoming the geographical handicap as a landlocked country through investing in human capital and recognize individuals for their services to the nation.
