Staff report
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — June 2, 2025
A person was found dead in a vehicle surrounded by aggressive dogs Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of the Bloomington Walmart. The emergency response resulted in two people being bitten when the dogs escaped the vehicle.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews were dispatched around 12 p.m. on June 1, 2025, to the Walmart located at 3585 W State Road 45 after a 911 caller reported an unresponsive person in a car that had struck a concrete light pole base. The caller also reported numerous aggressive dogs inside the vehicle, preventing anyone from checking on the individual.
Monroe Fire Protection District personnel were the first to arrive and confirmed the occupant was deceased. They also encountered approximately eight dogs inside the vehicle acting aggressively. When firefighters opened the car door to render aid, several of the dogs escaped and began charging at bystanders and emergency responders.
Sheriff’s deputies established a containment zone in a low-traffic area of the parking lot, according to the MCSO. A civilian and a firefighter were bitten during the chaos and later received minor treatment at a local hospital.
Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office Animal Management Division captured five dogs on the scene and transported them to the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter. Three additional dogs were caught later in the day. Authorities believe all the dogs have been accounted for, but said patrols will continue in the area to ensure none remain at large.
Detectives say the deceased individual had been living out of the vehicle and was frequently seen parked on the west side of the Walmart lot. Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators showed the vehicle striking a light pole at low speed around 8:20 a.m., but the incident wasn’t reported until nearly four hours later.
Preliminary evidence suggests the person may have suffered a medical emergency before the crash. Investigators said no foul play is suspected. The Monroe County Coroner’s Office is conducting an autopsy, and identification Monday morning was pending notification of next of kin.
