Ferrucci finished the race in second place, and despite the fine, he will be allowed to retain his finishing position. A.J. Foyt Enterprises, however, will have to forfeit 25 championship driver and entrant points because of the inspection failure.
A driver ballast weight issue is what caused Ferrucci’s car to fail a post-race inspection.
Much has been made of IndyCar’s vehicle inspection and rules enforcement processes in recent weeks.
Ahead of the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500, two Team Penske drivers — two-time Indy 500 champion Josef Newgarden and 2018 Indy 500 winner Will Power — were moved to the back of the starting grid
Soon after the illegal modifications were identified, Team Penske announced a major organizational shakeup. Among those that departed from the organization during the changeup was team president Tim Cindric.
Team Penske had been under fire for rules violations well before the 2025 Indianapolis 500 attenuator incident. According to a report from the Associated Press, Team Penske was caught in a scandal related to push-to-pass technology in 2024.
In 2024, Newgarden was found to have access to a forbidden horsepower boost during the NTT IndyCar Series-opener in St. Petersburg, Florida. Newgarden won the race — the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. He was later stripped of his victory, and Cindric was suspended for two races, including the 2024 Indy 500.
After the 2025 Indy 500, Andretti Global’s Marcus Ericsson and Kyle Kirkwood were penalized because their cars failed post-race inspections. Both drivers’ cars were found to have illegal modifications that may have improved their aerodynamic efficiency.
Ericsson was stripped of a second-place finish and officially moved to 31st. Kirkwood was relegated to 32nd place.
Kirkwood is one of two drivers to win a race on the NTT IndyCar Series circuit this year. 2025 Indy 500 champion Alex Palou has won five of the first seven IndyCar races of this season. Kirkwood was victorious in the two races Palou did not win.
The next NTT IndyCar Series race is the Bommarito Automotive Group 500, which will be held at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois, on June 15 at 8 p.m.
