(KRON) — Multiple lanes on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge have been shut down Monday afternoon due to emergency maintenance, Caltrans announced in a press release. Maintenance crews located “unsound, spalling deck concrete on the upper deck” of the bridge near Pier 25.

Lane Closures:

  • Westbound (upper deck): Lane 2
  • Eastbound (lower deck): Lanes 2 and 3

Lane 1 will stay open in both directions as crews make repairs on the bridge, according to Caltrans. A pothole is the cause of the concrete found on the upper deck. The pothole is “small,” according to Caltrans Chief of Public Affairs Bart Ney.

Caltrans crews have closed these lanes and “may take several hours to complete.” Bay Area residents’ afternoon commute will likely be impacted, officials said. The agency posted a photo of the pothole (below).

Caltrans sent the press release at 2:35 p.m.

“Motorists should expect delays and are advised to seek alternate routes or allow extra travel time,” Caltrans said.
