1 killed in 2-car crash in Hancock County

HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. — One person was killed in a two-car crash in Hancock County Monday afternoon.

According to a press release, Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the intersection of County Road 600 East and U.S. Highway 40 around 3:35 p.m. to investigate a vehicle crash. When deputies arrived at the scene, they located a 2017 Acura ILX and a 2012 Ford F-350 that had been involved in a crash.

HCSO confirmed that the driver of the Acura was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies reported that the driver was an adult female and the Acura’s lone occupant. Police indicated that they are still working to formally identify the Acura’s driver and notify her family of her death.

The driver of the F-350 was identified as a juvenile male after the crash. Medics transported the F-350’s driver from the scene to IU Methodist Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

As their investigation unfolded, police determined the Acura’s driver was travelling northbound on County Road 600 East before the crash. The F-350’s driver was headed eastbound on U.S. Highway 40 when the crash occurred.

Per HCSO, the crash happened when the Acura’s driver pulled into the F-350’s path. Soon after the Acura’s driver pulled in front of the F-350, a crash occurred.

Both vehicles ended up in a field after the crash.

Deputies reported that the Acura’s driver faced a stop sign at the intersection of County Road 600 East and U.S. Highway 40. No stop signs were in the F-350’s path of travel at the time of the crash, according to HCSO.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that the F-350’s driver and his parents have been cooperative with its investigation. Deputies do not currently believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

HCSO indicated that westbound U.S. Highway 40 was closed for about two hours while officials cleaned up and investigated the crash.
