INDIANAPOLIS – Road construction is in full swing around central Indiana, which means drivers should watch for work zones, lane restrictions and reduced speed limits.

Multiple projects will affect the commute in and around Indianapolis, with Interstate 65 near downtown and Interstate 465 on the north and east sides of town in focus this week.

I-65 Safety and Efficiency project

Drivers can expect more closures on Interstate 65 this week as crews install barrier walls and place pavement markings.

Beginning on Thursday, June 5, northbound I-65 will be down to two lanes between I-465 and Morris Street and one lane between Morris Street and Virginia Avenue.

The one-lane restriction will remain through the end of the year, while the two-lane restriction continues through late 2026, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Drivers will also encounter a pair of overnight lane restrictions over the weekend from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Friday, June 6

  • Northbound I-65 reduced to one lane between Troy Avenue and Raymond Street

Saturday, June 7

  • Northbound I-65 reduced to one lane between Raymond Street and Shelby Street

Hannah Avenue bridge, I-65 work

The Hannah Avenue overpass bridge will close “on or after” June 16. This will result in the closure Hannah Avenue between Brickenwood Trace and Lasalle Street.

The new bridge is slated to open in the fall and will include a six-foot sidewalk on the north side and a 10-foot shared-use path on the south side.

Expect full weekend closures on I-65 in June and July for drainage improvements and other infrastructure. Those closures will extend from the I-65/I-70 interchange to the I-65/I-465 interchange and include all nearby entrance ramps.

Southbound lane closures are scheduled from 9 p.m. on Friday, June 13, through 5 a.m. on Monday, June 16, and June 20 through June 23.

Northbound closures are set for the weekends of June 27, July 11, July 18 and July 25.

Speed limit change

A construction zone speed limit of 45 mph is in effect on I-65 for the Safety and Efficiency project.

INDOT said drivers should slow down, pay extra attention in work zones and avoid any distractions, as they’ll need to adjust to lane shifts and restrictions.

The I-65 Safety and Efficiency project is focused on a five-mile stretch from I-465 to the I-65/I-70 overpass. Crews will add a travel lane in each direction along with other improvements.

Additional closures for signage work

Drivers on I-65 will also come across restrictions and temporary closures for overnight signage work just south of downtown Indianapolis between Southport Road and I-465.

The changes will include temporary stoppages lasting up to 20 minutes during some portions of the overnight work.
