CLOVIS, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – 16-year-old transgender athlete AB Hernandez is going home with hardware after Saturday’s track and field state finals.

Hernandez competed in the long jump, high jump and triple jump events, earning a second-place medal and two first-place medals.

However, for each of those medals, another girl got the exact same one.

The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) recently announced that if a transgender athlete advances in a competition, the next highest-scoring cisgender girl will get the same opportunity.

Despite that decision, many fans still did not support Hernandez’s participation, with many in the crowd booing.

At one point, a coach stopped the event to address the crowd, telling them to be respectful. He threatened to stop the event again if they continued to heckle.

Hernandez received a similar reception on the outside of the fence as well.

“We’ve got a law that’s been on the books in California for 12 years now that allows biological men to be in girls’ locker rooms. That is just outrageous,” Republican candidate for governor Steve Hilton said.

Hilton drove to Clovis Saturday morning to protest.

He was joined by Clovis Mayor Pro Tem Diane Pearce, saying it is unfair for someone assigned male at birth to compete in a girls’ sport.

“Even Gavin Newsom says that this is all deeply unfair, but he’s not doing anything about it. So I wanted to come here today to say that when I’m the governor of California, I will act. I will do something about it,” Hilton said.

Hernandez walked away with more first and second-place medals than any other girl in the stadium, declining to speak with the media.
