‘Reckless’ driver rear-ends semi trailer on Fresno highway

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A driver was hospitalized Saturday evening after crashing at a high rate of speed into the back of a semi truck stopped along a highway in Fresno, the California Highway Patrol announced.

According to CHP, they responded to a crash on the southbound shoulder of Highway 99 near Fresno Street.

Officers report a commercial truck and trailer experiencing mechanical issues was stopped on the shoulder when a “reckless” Ford Taurus drove on the shoulder, ultimately rear-ending the trailer at a high rate of speed.

Photos provided by the agency show the backside of the trailer with moderate damage and the involved Taurus with major damage, including the vehicle’s throttle.

Investigators say the unseatbelted driver suffered major injuries.

CHP reminds drivers to always wear their seatbelts and not travel at excessive speeds on the roadway, as that can lead to devastating consequences.
