(WHTM) — Power outages are harmful, inconvenient, and can happen at any time. Here’s what to do when your home loses power.

Pa.gov released some useful tips for what you should do when the power goes out:

  • Use flashlights for emergency lighting. Candles can cause fires.
  • Toss refrigerated foods that have sat for more than four hours.
  • Keep freezer doors closed. A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours.
  • Turn off or disconnect appliances and equipment in case of a momentary power surge that can damage them.
  • If you use your car to recharge devices, don’t keep the car running in a garage, a partially enclosed space, or close to a home. This can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Generators can also be helpful, but be aware of carbon monoxide poisoning, among other hazards. Pa.gov urges citizens to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, keep them dry and cool, and never run a generator indoors.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission adds that even if utility crews are not visible to you, vital work is indeed being done to restore power as quickly as possible.
