According to a Facebook post from the Wayne Township Fire Department, Battalion Chief Mike “Cowboy” Turner died from injuries he sustained in a serious motorcycle crash. WTFD reported that, though Turner was unable to recover from his injuries, he chose to be an organ donor.
In a Facebook post of its own, the Decatur Township Fire Department indicated that Turner was passionate about organ donation.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our beloved brother, Battalion Chief Michael “Mike” Turner,” DTFD Chief Brandon Wood wrote in a prepared statement. “Chief Turner is surrounded by his family and friends during this time. Chief Turner was very passionate about the Decatur Township Fire Department, as well as the training of future firefighters and EMS professionals.”
Turner was a 22-year DTFD veteran at the time of his death.
Per DTFD, Turner’s family is organizing a public Celebration of Life that all are welcomed to attend to remember Turner. Turner’s family is also asking for donations to Foundation Fighting Blindness in lieu of flowers.
“Please keep BC Turner, Firefighter Michael Turner and their entire family in your thoughts and prayers,” Wood wrote, “as we will continue to support them through this difficult time.”
