BATON ROUGE, La. (
Louisiana First) — The Baton Rouge Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened early Sunday morning following a traffic stop at the intersection of Winbourne Avenue and Foster Drive.
According to police, an officer in a marked unit saw a vehicle run a red light at the intersection around 2:21 a.m. The officer activated his lights and sirens in an attempt to initiate a traffic stop. Several people got out of the vehicle and ran away on foot. At least some of them were armed.
Police said the officer pursued the driver of the vehicle, who then pointed an “AK-style weapon at him.” The officer discharged his weapon, striking the suspect twice. The suspect went to the hospital with injuries which were non-life-threatening.
Investigators learned the suspect had finished probation for an earlier armed robbery conviction. BRPD said he will be charged with attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon when he is released from the hospital.
Police said more charges may follow as the investigation continues.
During the investigation, officers recovered a handgun with an extended magazine near the scene. No officers were injured during the incident, police said. The case remains under investigation.
