CHICAGO (WGN) — Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan should spend more than 12 years behind bars, federal prosecutors say.
In a memo filed Friday evening, prosecutors said Madigan has expressed no remorse for his crimes and accused him of lying on the stand.
The 83-year-old longtime politician was convicted in February of conspiring to accept bribes from ComEd.
“The crimes charged and proven at trial demonstrate that Madigan engaged in corrupt activity at the highest level of state government for nearly a decade,” the filing says.
Madigan’s sentencing is scheduled for June 13. In addition to prison time, he could also be fined $1.5 million.
