Pedalpalooza! Portland kicks off Bike Summer this weekend

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Portland’s annual Bike Summer is kicking off this weekend with hundreds of community-led bike rides from the month of June through August.

Bike Summer, also known as Pedalpalooza, has been a tradition in Portland for more than 20 years. Organizers call it an “open source festival,” because anyone in the community is welcome to host a ride.

The annual Bike Summer Kickoff Ride is set for Sunday, June 1, when several groups — ranging from the Queer Kickoff to the Vancouver Kickoff — will ride to meet up at Peninsula Park at 1 p.m.

From there, the official ride will begin at 3 p.m. and continue until the group makes its way through the streets of Portland to its final destination, Colonel Summers Park.

But the kickoff ride is only the beginning. This summer has themed rides for every fandom, music lover, and outdoor enthusiast. The options can seem overwhelming, so check out these standouts:

Prince4Ever!

June 7 at 6 p.m.

In celebration of His Royal Badness, this ride honors Prince’s birthday by wearing purple and listening to his discography — on a bike! The ride begins at Sewallcrest Park and ends at the kickoff location for the Prom Ride.

Loud N’ Lit

June 28 at 8:30 p.m.

It’s exactly how it sounds. Attendees typically ride with party lights — though the name ‘Loud ‘N Lit” is certainly open to interpretation (for riders who are 21+). The ride kicks off at Irving Park.

Chappell Roan Ride

July 5 at 7 p.m.

Are you H-O-T-T-O-G-O? Then you’re in luck, because so is this pop music-themed ride! Riders will roll through Portland listening to hits by modern pop stars like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and more. The ride begins at Colonel Summers Park.

The World Naked Bike Ride

July 26, time TBD

Possibly the most popular ride of Bike Summer (or at least the best known), The World Naked Bike Ride is back after a brief hiatus. Riders are encouraged to bare it all in the name of the environment and body positivity. Details for the ride have yet to be determined.

Lord of the Rings Ride

Aug. 16 at 6 p.m.

Are you feeling thin? Like butter spread over too much bread? This ride ought to add some heft to your spirit. Riders will dress up like hobbits and wizards as they make their trek up Mt. Tabor on wheels. The journey begins at Sewallcrest Park.
