“Hurricane Party” is written by New Orleans native Bridget Purdy. Purdy is the playwright, producer and actor who plays the character Megan, as well as the Hurricane in the show.
A storm is brewing and so is the booze in “Hurricane Party,” a play which explores how humor, community and resilience carry people through a storm.
“It is about three friends who haven’t seen each other in awhile, and they come home to Louisiana and a hurricane rolls through,” Purdy said.
The play was inspired by Purdy’s upbringing in Louisiana.
“The friends play truth or dare and then secrets come out and drinks are had, and everyone finds their truth. We even have parts in the play where audience members can write ideas for some of the dares,” she said.
Purdy said, “I love this state. I love this city. I always wanted to tell stories about the city.”
Don’t worry, in this play, the hurricane is not a Category 5 storm.
“This one is very much a chill one,” Purdy said.
The weatherman/narrator character, Alex Landry, is played by Mo Polyak, while Kieran Toumey and Madeline Masson round out the cast.
“It gives you a fun and silly feeling being in it. I did a lot of improv in the beginning to figure things out, which is my favorite thing. A lot of freedom with silly people, just a great time,” Polyak said.
“Hurricane Party” is directed by Caroline Nash and produced by Gumball Machine, a multimedia company founded by Purdy and her husband Nicholas Phillippi.
Next stop for “Hurricane Party” is the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. If you’d like to support the show’s international tour they have an Indiegogo campaign and merchandise.
“Hurricane Party” will be showing at Big Couch NOLA on Saturday, May 31 at 7:30 p.m. and then again on Sunday, June 1 at 2:30 p.m.
