Man shot by police after allegedly hitting CPD officer with truck during flee attempt on Northwest Side

CHICAGO (WGN) — A suspect is recovering in the hospital on Saturday after authorities say he was shot by Chicago police after allegedly hitting an officer with his car while attempting to flee the scene of a shooting on the Northwest Side.

According to police, it all started around 2:10 a.m. Saturday, when officers were called to the scene of a battery in progress and shots fired at a business in the 3100 block of North Central Avenue in Belmont Cragin.

After police arrived on the scene, an employee of the business directed officers to the man they believed fired the gun, as he was getting into a red pickup truck nearby.

Officers approached the man and instructed him to exit the truck, but he allegedly refused and accelerated in the direction of the officers, hitting one of them. Police then opened fire on the vehicle, but the suspect behind the wheel, a 28-year-old man, allegedly continued driving.

Authorities eventually caught up with the vehicle a short distance from the scene, in the 3200 block of North Menard Avenue.

As police approached, they noticed the suspect, who had sustained gunshot wounds, was on the ground near the car.

Officers rendered medical aid to the suspect until Chicago Fire Department EMS arrived on scene and took him to the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Following the incident, officers allegedly recovered a gun from the suspect’s car.

Authorities have not yet identified the man allegedly involved in the incident or announced any charges against him.

Authorities did not provide an update on the condition of the officer who was hit by the truck during the initial stop.

An investigation into the shooting is now underway by Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), as well as CPD’s Investigative Response Team is investigating.

The officer or officers involved in the shooting will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.

Those with information on the shooting can contact COPA on their website or by calling 312-746-3609.
