IMPD: Shooting leaves woman dead on Indy’s east side, 1 detained

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis metro police responded to a shooting that left a woman dead on the city’s east side Friday night.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched around 6:01 p.m. to a residence located on Burbank Road in response to a shooting in the area. IMPD said officers arrived and found an adult female inside a residence suffering from gunshot wounds.

Medical aid was immediately provided by officers until emergency medical personnel pronounced her deceased on the scene.

William Young, a public information officer for IMPD, confirmed officers detained a “person of interest” near the residence. It remains unclear what role, if any, this individual may have had in the incident. Officers are not looking for any other suspects at this time.

Young said detectives are working to determine if this shooting was accidental or if the woman was a victim of a targeted attack. When the call was initially made, Young said dispatch put it out as a possible accidental shooting.

As of this article’s publication, detectives are still on scene and canvassing for possible evidence for the next several hours. The shooting remains under investigation.

Anyone with information related to Friday’s deadly shooting should call IMPD at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS (8477).
