According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, the fire, which happened at a home in the 800 block of North Sibley Street, was reported around 8:40 a.m. with firefighters arriving shortly after.
On scene, there was reportedly smoke seen coming from inside the house. After extinguishing the fire, an older woman was found inside, wounded from the fire. She was pronounced dead on scene.
Law enforcement officials say initial findings suggest that the fire was accidental, although the exact cause is still being investigated.
