A pair of cleats and several footballs still adorn the ground along Florida Road where nearly 3 months ago, 18-year-old Mason Alexander was killed when a car he was a passenger in swerved off the road, slammed into a tree and caught fire.
“It’s devastating. It would be devastating for any parent and we don’t wish what happened to Mason on any parent,” said the victim’s uncle, Rahvy Murray.
According to court records, the car’s driver, Trey Williams, was driving 56 miles per hour in a 35 zone when he tried to illegally pass another car and lost control trying to avoid a head-on collision.
Williams, who was 17 at the time but has now turned 18, faces charges of reckless homicide as an adult in Hamilton County, even though his attorneys argued he was not intoxicated at the time of the crash.
Murray said he’s thrilled with the judge’s decision, even though that is only the first step in getting justice for Mason.
Step one for the suspect will be making an initial hearing in adult court on Monday.
“I was really relieved to hear that decision. I think that was the most appropriate decision,” said Murray.
“I think this brings an opportunity for justice that wouldn’t be available if this was a juvenile case,” said Hamilton County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Josh Kocher.
Alexander, who wore number 15 for the Royals, had graduated early and planned to play football for the University of Pittsburgh.
Prosecutors know his loss caused a lot of pain and that led to frustration from some in the community about how long it took to charge the suspect, but the case’s chief prosecutor insists criminal cases simply take time.
“I know there was a lot of people suffering from the loss of such a promising young men and a lot of impatience with the process, but we’ve been working hard, especially the sheriff’s department,” said Kocher.
“You know Mason’s life meant something and so we want to make sure we follow through on our commitment to see this to the end,” said Murray.
If he’s convicted of Reckless Homicide as a Level 5 Felony, Williams would face a maximum sentence of 6 years in prison.
