Docs: Man assaulted woman arriving for work at Greenwood apartment complex

GREENWOOD, Ind. — A Greenwood man faces a felony charge for allegedly assaulting a woman as she arrived for work at his apartment complex, hours after aggressively asking another employee for sex.

Kushal Patel, 36, was arrested last week and officially charged Thursday with felony criminal confinement, battery and intimidation.

The charges stem from an alleged attack on May 21 at an unidentified apartment complex, according to police reports.

Bleeding man arrested

Greenwood police were called around 9 a.m. last Wednesday to the apartment complex on report of a battery. They arrived to find a man matching the suspect description driving out of the parking lot.

Officers blocked the car and identified the driver as Patel, who was “heavily bleeding from his crotch and leg area.” Police took Patel into custody and called for medics to come treat his injuries. When asked for an interview, Patel reportedly declined and asked to speak to a lawyer.

After Patel was handcuffed, officers went into the store area of the apartment complex to check on the victim. Upon entering, police saw items strewn about “due to a struggle” and a “large amount of blood” covering the floor from the front door to the back door.

Officers announced that police were there and found that the victim, a female employee, had locked herself in the back room and was crying.

Employee attacked

The victim told officers that she was opening the store at 9 a.m. when she noticed a man watching her from the parking lot. She reportedly said hello to the man and unlocked the door to let him in.

However, the man immediately ran after her and grabbed her arm before tackling her inside the store. The victim said she and the man began fighting on the ground, with her kicking him while trying to get away. Eventually, she was able to escape him and run to the back room to call 911.

Police noted the victim had redness on her upper arm, a slight cut on her wrist and a broken pinky nail on her left hand. She said she did not know what the man’s motive was and that she was unable to process it because things happened so fast.

Video camera footage from the complex captured the entire incident, which officers were able to view. Police noted that the “footage clearly shows” Patel walking in directly behind the employee, grabbing her, tackling her and not letting her up.

The footage reportedly also shows the victim escape from Patel after kicking him repeatedly, then running to the back room. Patel is then seen standing by the locked door for a few moments before leaving the building.

‘Want to f**k?’

Officers on scene were also told that another office employee had a strange encounter with Patel earlier that day. The employee said Patel, later identified as a resident of the apartments, had walked into the office earlier and “looked around to make sure no one else” was inside.

Patel then reportedly walked up to the employee’s desk and she asked how she could help him.

“Want to f**k?,” Patel reportedly asked.

“Excuse me?,” the employee replied.

Patel then allegedly walked around the desk, got closer to her and again asked, “Want to f**k?” The employee said she felt “very threatened” and that “she knew what he Patel was going to do,” so she yelled for a coworker. That’s when Patel “quickly turned around” and left the office.

Aftermath

An employee told police that Patel had been a resident at the apartments since 2014 and that he had never had any prior issues. Online court records show Patel has no major criminal history in Indiana other than a domestic no-contact order being filed against him.

Patel was first taken by police to the hospital for jail clearance “due to injuries from the victim.” He was later booked into the Johnson County Jail. Records indicate he was released Monday after posting a $100,000 bond.

Patel has since been officially charged in Johnson Superior Court 1. Records show he made an initial court appearance on Thursday.
