Berks County man pleads guilty in art fraud scheme

(WHTM) — A Berks County man pleaded guilty Thursday to federal wire fraud and mail fraud charges after authorities say he sold counterfeit paintings purportedly by Picasso, Warhol, Keith Haring, and more.

Carter Reese, 77, of Reading, was charged earlier this month in what the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania called “a scheme in which he defrauded customers by making false representations about the source and authenticity of certain art purportedly created by prominent artists.”

From 2019 to 2021, authorities aid he sold art represented as genuine pieces by prominent artists, including Keith Haring, Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol, knowing they weren’t.
