MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A hidden compartment full of fentanyl was uncovered after an out-of-state driver allowed officers to search his car.

On Sunday, around 6:20 p.m., officers say they pulled over a 2002 Toyota Camry from Washington for a traffic violation on I-5 near Highway 140. After noticing several indications pointing to “criminal activity,” police asked to search the vehicle. The driver consented.

While searching the car, police found a hidden compartment built into the back of the rear seats. Inside, they say they found five square packages carrying 11 pounds (valued at $399,520) of fentanyl.

The driver was arrested and charged with possession of fentanyl for sale, transportation of fentanyl across noncontiguous counties, and aftermarket compartment used to transport narcotics.
